EVTA OF BC ENDORSES THE EVT CERTIFICATION PROGRAM Emergency Services equipment must be able to respond and perform to its utmost at a moments notice. There is a great deal of emphasis placed on the condition and performance of the emergency response vehicle and its personnel but what about the people who are expected to maintain and repair this sophisticated equipment? What level of training have they received and what are the expectations of them? The various fleet maintenance centers and fire departments today are experiencing a shift in responsibility to Technicians being more involved with the equipment purchasing process. This puts the onus on the technician to be knowledgeable of the regulations and standards that face equipment manufacturers. There has been a sharp increase in technological changes and a greater focus on safety and prevention. The technician/mechanic is a multi-faceted trade. They are part welder, machinist, plumber, electrician and draftsman. Today’s toolboxes are being built with desk drawers and laptop computer shelves. The technicians of today are often part of a larger group, neglected by emergency response agencies and expected to work on a variety of equipment or vehicles other than emergency vehicles. Private contractors are often left in the dark. The Emergency Vehicle Technician’s need for on going training, education and recognition has often been unfulfilled. The EVT Certification Commission, which emerged from the Fire Services Industry, has gone on help meet those needs. EVTA of BC recognizes the EVT Certification Commission in development of effective training programs for personnel involved with all varieties of emergency service vehicles. EVTA of BC supports the Certification Commission’s program. EVTA of BC recognizes their program as a means to enhance and improve the technician’s careers through education, training, recognition and self-respect which will benefit the technician, their employers, the industry and most importantly the general public. EVTA of BC is not affiliated with the Emergency Vehicle Certification Commission, EVT Certification Inc. www.evtcc.org |
